The only known works of the Chicago-based novelist Zara Wright, Black and White Tangled Threads and its sequel Kenneth, published together in 1920, tell a tale of romance and intrigue, racism and racial uplift. Set in the upper-class social worlds of the United States and Europe and written in the style of the melodramatic novels of the nineteenth century, these works explore complex themes of race consciousness, passing, and interracial marriage through a large cast of vivid characters.
