The essays in this collection consider the phenomenon of exile and its intersection with the lives and work of a diverse group of women writers. Following the defeat of the Republicans in 1939 and the establishment of Franco's dictatorship, these women's lives, professions, and creative work suffered a sudden turn that ended in their negotiation of their own identity in the face of pressing historic circumstances.
