""Non nova, sed nove." This Latin proverb, which means "not new, but new," invites us to see repetition as an end in itself. Life itself is a perpetual repetition. Paradoxically, the only experience that has no chance of being repeated is death. Does this mean that repetition is a part of life and, in turn, of the imaginary? What are the modalities of repetition in literary texts? As a creative process, in what ways does repetition work? What is the intentionality of repetition? This edited collection includes sixteen studies that explore these questions by undertaking long-awaited interdisciplinary analyses of repetition in the French-language literature of four periods of history: the Middle Ages, the Ancien Re gime, and the modern and contemporary epochs. This diachronic approach allows us to explore stylistic constants, variations, repetitions and innovations. The different perspectives of the authors, guided by their respective fields of expertise, create a synergy that stimulates reflection around the notion of repetition in French and French texts.
