In the words of Stephen King (re: James Herbert): "He puts on his combat boots and assaults the reader with horror". First read as a pre-teen, this tale of a cruel Caribbean plantation owner who acquires a demonic adding machine, is one of the scariest books I ever read. It was many years before I understood and appreciated the subtext of 'a fable of Capitalism". Still scary though...
