As bombs descend on their home, fifteen-year-old Trixie and her young brother, Teddy, are fighting a more private battle against their violent father. Fleeing Portsmouth, towards the safety of a relative's home in Gosport, Trixie's luck finally seems about to change as fate introduces her to Jem, a handsome young market trader who takes her under his wing and into his heart. When Trixie's uncle sends Teddy away under strange circumstance, she finds some comfort in Jem's unfaltering adoration. But Trixie's heart never strays from her beloved little brother who seems lost for ever. Until Teddy's found, her own happiness remains a world away.
