The Garretson Chronicle is a fictional record of three generations of Garretsons, inheritors of the Puritan intellectual tradition and of transcendentalism. It is laid in Compton, Massachusetts, an imaginary town with much of the history and many of the characteristics of Concord{u2014}a town, which, indeed, seems, although it is itself described as being located near Concord, to occupy the same space as that historic place.
