In Gender Crash, Toni Denise, a transgender woman, analyses and highlights the colonisation of the female flesh body by the male spirit, proclaiming: “men are dumb, I know, I’ve been one of them”. This film was produced by Critical Art Ensemble in the early 1990s, at a time when the collective initially focused on projects with local migrant workers in Florida, involved in agriculture. During this period, CAE projects began to appear in both real and virtual forms: one example is the Useless Technology project, conceived as a newspaper insert criticising technological progress. It was included in Sunday newspapers and vending machines, distributed through street actions and later made freely available online.
