Icon painter Ilya Khodyrev receives an unusual commission: a family portrait inspired by Mexican retablos. His initial enthusiasm soon gives way to the tedious task of traveling in search of the materials he needs. He sets out with his partner, Venera, and her son. As the journey unfolds, it gradually becomes clear that the painting he is creating reflects his own life.
