Their Aravan
No ratings yet
Aravan is a minor character in the Sanskrit versions of Mahabharatha. He is the son of Arjuna and Ulupi, a naga princess. However, the Tamil folklore retelling places Aravan as a prominent character. The primary worship happens at the Aravan temple at the Koovagam village which has also been gaining attention in recent decades due to the large presence of the transwomen. The transwomen identify themselves with Krishna who changed his sex and married Aravan. Seeking Aravan's love, these transgenders symbolically marry Aravan with the priests of the temple tying Taali around their necks. The next day, when Aravan is symbolically sacrificed, the transwomen wear white saris, tear out their hair and break bangles and mourn for their beloved Aravan.
