Leningrad, the late 1970s. The Cold War. Soviet ballet is the pride of the nation. Yet, sold-out performances, prestigious titles, and tours in the West represent only the glamorous side of an artist's life. Behind the scenes lie grueling daily toil, professional intrigue, and constant surveillance by the KGB.Andrei Pletnev, a principal dancer at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, is invited to join one of the country's finest troupes in Leningrad. It is his last chance to fulfill his potential as a dancer. But everything else fades into the background when he encounters his first love, Maria Simonova, there. She is married and successful. Andrei hopes that their youthful romance is a thing of the past. However, their feelings reignite with renewed intensity, sweeping away barriers and boundaries—and putting not only their careers but their very lives at risk.
