Cold. We encounter it every day. But we still don't know what it is we're really dealing with. What threat does global warming pose to the world? Why did they try to build an aircraft carrier out of ice during World War II? What can frozen water samples recovered from subglacial Lake Vostok tell scientists? How has cold influenced the birth and destruction of entire civilizations? Two years of filming took place around the world – in Russia, Norway, the UK, the US, and, of course, on the coldest continent on the planet. What did it look like before? Is it true that Antarctica's ice is slowly melting? The filmmakers sought answers to these questions on expeditions and in research labs, where they conducted complex experiments. "Without ice and snow, there would be no ocean currents; the oceans would be deprived of oxygen, meaning there would be no life. The presence of ice determines the temperature difference between the poles and the equatorial regions; this temperature difference generates air currents in the atmosphere that shape the planet's climate," explains Magnus Magnusson, Scientific Secretary of the International Glaciological Society. "In short, life on Earth would be impossible without cold, snow, and ice."
