The plot is partly based on the novel The Kaydash's Family by Ivan Nechuy-Levitsky, whose events unfold in the 1860s, just a few years after the abolition of serfdom in Russian Empire. The creator of the series Natalka Vorozhbyt made a lot of changes in the original series.The events of the television series took place chronologically from 2005 to 2014. The main drama unfolds around the generation gap problem between the parents and children. The plot of the television series is filled with various dramatic confrontations between all family members, the climax of which comes in 2014 when the family is divided by the Revolution of Dignity and the war in Donbas.
