A memory of a scene from an experimental film I saw about twenty years ago, in which a series of Technicolor “The End” credits scrolled across a television screen... The “END” credits were a convention, much like in publishing, an element that was part of the cinematic setup without actually being part of the film or the narrative. However, their design could give rise to an infinite number of variations and whimsical interpretations... In this video, “FIN” becomes the main character. Playful, it changes its “costume” each time, literally bursting through the screen, relentlessly and inexorably crushing the fragments of action visible beneath it. A succession of “FIN”s, a plethora of what is normally unique and definitive, perhaps to address a vague need for finitude in a world of boundless playlists and dematerialization that equates to eternity.
